At room temperature it is a rather dense, viscous and sweet, colorless liquid; the presence of three -OH groups makes it miscible with water in all proportions.
Glycerol or vegetable glycerin is a natural molecule, used in cosmetic preparations for its natural ability to retain water in tissues. Its highly moisturizing action keeps the skin soft, protected and deeply hydrated.
Glycerol is an organic compound in whose structure there are three -OH groups (in other words, it is a "triol"). Glycerol is a component of lipids (oils and fats) and of phospholipids or glycolipids, from which it is obtained by hydrolysis or transesterification.
When the body uses its fat reserves, it first breaks them down into fatty acids and glycerol, the latter being converted into glucose in the liver, becoming an energy source for cellular metabolism.
The term glycerol refers exclusively to the pure substance, while on the market it appears in the form of derivatives, such as glycerin which contains 95%.
Glycerin is a liquid obtained as a by-product of the fat saponification process by hydrolysis: it is first concentrated and then subjected to the purification process, where residual fatty acids and impurities are removed.
It appears as a colorless viscous liquid, able to mix with water and alcohol in any proportion.
Glycerin is moisturizing because it is highly hygroscopic (able to absorb moisture from the air), allowing it to fill with water and making it excellent: moisturizing, lubricating and emollient for the skin. Glycerin is used for this reason in many formulations for dermocosmetic use.
